Is perceived similarity more than assumed similarity? An interpersonal path to seeing similarity between self and others.

چکیده

People perceive similarity between their own personality characteristics and the of others. This association has sometimes been labeled assumed similarity, reflecting interpretation that it is a cognitive bias. Another possibility, however, an interpersonal path to perceived similarity: traits are manifested in behavior may elicit similar or dissimilar from others, people form perceptions based on what they have elicited. Drawing theories perception theory, we proposed tested for evidence such perceiver-elicited effects, as well trait state similarity. Previously unacquainted participants (N = 322) completed assessments, interacted dyads next day, then reported each other's personalities. The results showed broad support expression accurate most Big Five domains facets. preregistered directional hypotheses elicitation were supported 3 5 traits. Participants interpersonally elicited accurately sociability openness, dissimilarity assertiveness. We also found agreeableness energy level, but did not partners those discuss implications treating dynamic, multicomponent phenomenon, possibility emerges repeated experience (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2021 APA, all rights reserved).

Binds and bounds of communion: effects of interpersonal values on assumed similarity of self and others.

Assumed similarity refers to ascribing similar attributes to the self and others. Because self-other similarity facilitates communion, people who value communion should be prone to assume self-other similarity; but because self-other similarity also evokes obligation, they may be prone to assume similarity only with others with whom they are or would feel comfortable being interconnected. We te...

Seeing structure: Shape skeletons modulate perceived similarity.

An intrinsic part of seeing objects is seeing how similar or different they are relative to one another. This experience requires that objects be mentally represented in a common format over which such comparisons can be carried out. What is that representational format? Objects could be compared in terms of their superficial features (e.g., degree of pixel-by-pixel overlap), but a more intrigu...

Perceiving others' personalities: examining the dimensionality, assumed similarity to the self, and stability of perceiver effects.

In interpersonal perception, "perceiver effects" are tendencies of perceivers to see other people in a particular way. Two studies of naturalistic interactions examined perceiver effects for personality traits: seeing a typical other as sympathetic or quarrelsome, responsible or careless, and so forth. Several basic questions were addressed. First, are perceiver effects organized as a global ev...

Processing is shaped by multiple tasks: There is more to rules and similarity than Rules-to-Similarity

We argue that the Rules-Similarity continuum is only a useful formalism for particular, isolated tasks and must rest on the assumption that representations formed during a particular task are independent of other tasks. We show this to be an unrealistic conjecture. We additionally point out that describing categorization as selective weighing and abstracting of features misses the important ste...

TOPOLOGICAL SIMILARITY OF L-RELATIONS

$L$-fuzzy rough sets are extensions of the classical rough sets by relaxing theequivalence relations to $L$-relations. The topological structures induced by$L$-fuzzy rough sets have opened up the way for applications of topological factsand methods in granular computing. In this paper, we firstly prove thateach arbitrary $L$-relation can generate an Alexandrov $L$-topology.Based on this fact, w...
